Pontiac READS! Mission and Vision Statement

Pontiac READS! is a member of the National Campaign for Grade Level Reading. Our mission is to ensure that all children in the City of Pontiac read, write, speak, listen, and visually represent proficiently. Our vision is to invest in Pontiac children’s right to literacy access and equity by intentionally and explicitly providing community-wide support for literacy development from birth-grade 3.

SUMMER READING

We are excited to partner with the Michigan Learning Channel for their Summer Of Fun Reading Program. The MLC Program is a free, 8-week program that encourages kids to “Learn, Do, and Explore” with literacy and math lessons, hands-on science and fitness activities, and career exploration and virtual field trips. You can find videos, a fun activity book, local events, and more to keep preschool-6th grade students engaged in learning during the summer. To participate pick up a MLC Summer Activity Book at one of our upcoming events or download one online.

In conjunction with We Love Lit, we have created a Companion Summer Reading List based on each of the Program Themes! Download it here:

Pontiac READS! Structure and Processes

The Pontiac United Education Coalition (PUEC), a registered non-profit, has recruited literacy stakeholders from across Pontiac to form our local chapter of the Campaign Grade Level Reading (CGLR)–Pontiac READS! Collaboratively, educators, business leaders, not-for-profit organizations, and faith communities have come together to partner with parents and schools to support young children’s (birth-grade three) literacy development across Pontiac.

Pontiac READS! will focus on four goal areas, each of which research shows are critical to literacy success: summer learning, early literacy learning, school attendance, and health and wellness. Each of these goal areas will form a Collaborative that is composed of partners, subject experts, community stakeholders who will help navigate and drive planning for high quality program implementation using best practices. A Visionary Council will provide guidance and strategy for all CGLR collaboratives. Members include the chair of each collaborative, funders, and experts.

To implement the Campaign for Grade Level Reading, we will engage in the following with Pontiac READS! partner organizations:

Partner organizations will  participate in evidence-based practices, shared data collection procedures, and application of data analysis to drive program improvement to work collaboratively towards the goals of Pontiac READS!
